New Jersey Democrats vow to fight Trump in final gubernatorial debate

The top Democratic candidates running for governor of New Jersey faced off in their final debate Sunday night before next month’s primary, vowing to take on President Donald Trump and laying out why they are best positioned to win in November.

Five of the six Democratic contenders — Reps. Mikie Sherrill and Josh Gottheimer, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney — met Sunday night in a debate hosted by On New Jersey, the New Jersey Globe and Rider University. A sixth candidate, Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller, did not meet the fundraising threshold to take part.

The candidates sparred for over 2½ hours over a variety of state-specific issues, from transit and education funding to taxes and state budgets. But they were united in resolving to take on Trump.

New Jersey is one of two states, along with Virginia, with governor’s races this year, which could provide an early look at how voters are responding to Trump’s second term. While the Virginia matchup is set, the New Jersey candidates first have to compete in the June 10 primary.

There are contested primaries on both sides, but former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli has led the GOP primary field, and he secured Trump’s endorsement last week. The Democratic race has been more unpredictable, with a crowded field dividing voters.

Asked how schools and universities should navigate threats to federal funding if they do not comply with Trump’s executive orders on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives or transgender issues, all five said institutions should resist the administration.

Fulop said, “We should absolutely be pushing back,” while Sweeney called Trump “a criminal.” Gottheimer, referring to Trump as “this guy,” said, “The job of the governor is to fight him.”

Baraka — who was arrested on trespassing charges at a federal immigration detention facility this month — also said, “We have to fight back.” He has denied any wrongdoing and argued that the charges were politically motivated. Former Trump lawyer Alina Habba, now the interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, wrote on X after Baraka was arrested, “NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”

Sherrill, whom some consider the front-runner in the crowded race, called Trump “the most corrupt president this nation has ever had” and likened him to a playground bully.

“This is not a federal government you can work with,” she said.

Sherrill and Gottheimer faced some criticism, particularly from Sweeney, for not doing enough to combat Trump and Republicans in Washington.

“We need to start winning some fights in Washington,” Sweeney said a few times throughout the debate.

The candidates also laid out their paths to victory in November, with the race expected to be competitive. Trump lost New Jersey by 6 percentage points last year, a 10-point improvement on his performance in the 2020 election.

Sherrill previewed a potential case against Ciattarelli, saying he “has promised to DOGE New Jersey” and would not stand up to Trump (Ciattarelli has called for establishing a Department of Government Efficiency at the state level).

Both Sherrill and Gottheimer touted their victories in competitive House districts, and Gottheimer stressed his focus on reducing taxes and lowering costs.

Baraka pitched himself as the true progressive in the race, adding that progressive groups have endorsed him because “they know I’m going to fight Donald Trump, not just in words but in action.”

Sweeney, meanwhile, said that he would be best equipped to run state government and that other candidates pitching themselves as Trenton outsiders would face a steep learning curve.

Fulop said in his opening statement that Ciattarelli “will be tough to beat,” and he later said a candidate tied to the Democratic establishment, and particularly to Gov. Phil Murphy, would be “dead on arrival in November.” (Murphy cannot run for re-election because of term limits.)

“It is not going to be only a referendum on Donald Trump because independent voters in the state of New Jersey, a lot of them voted for Donald Trump,” Fulop said, later adding, “You need to move independent voters, you need to move Republican voters, with a clear vision of what New Jersey looks like.”

‘SNL’ star Ego Nwodim sports Crystal Palace shirt after cousin Eberechi Eze leads team to FA Cup win

“Saturday Night Live” cast member Ego Nwodim celebrated the end of the show’s historic 50th season the usual way, by socializing on stage in Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

She was there with the host, Scarlett Johansson, the musical guest, Bad Bunny, and fellow cast members. But her heart may have been dreaming of celebrations on the other side of the Atlantic.

Nwodim made sure cameras captured her upper torso as she sported a Crystal Palace jersey with the name of her cousin, English soccer star Eberechi Eze, on the back.

During the closing credits of the show's season finale on Saturday, May 17, 2025, "Saturday Night Live" cast member Ego Nwodim wears a Crystal Palace shirt with the name of her cousin, Palace player Eberechi Eze, on the back after the English Premier League team won the first major trophy in its 120 years as a professional club, defeating Manchester City to lift the FA Cup.

Hours earlier, Eze had helped Palace win the first major trophy in its 120-year professional history, scoring the only goal in the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

In a 2023 interview for the Crystal Palace website, Eze revealed the family relation and said he had given Nwodim one of his jerseys.

“That’s my cousin,” he told a team interviewer who asked why an “SNL” cast member had worn his jersey. “She came down to London and I gave her a shirt. So that’s quite sick.”

The shirt Nwodim wore Saturday matches the club’s third shirt from the 2022/23 season. She has worn it at least one other time on the show.

Nwodim and Eze share Igbo Nigerian heritage, with Eze having grown up in his team’s backyard of South London and Nwodim in Baltimore.

The relatives were both a part of history on Saturday. SNL completed a 50-season run that launched when it was still a hippie showcase featuring folk stars and psychedelic comedy. Eze led his team to a win at a historic place, too — Wembley Stadium.

Angel City defender Savy King discharged from hospital after heart surgery

Angel City’s Savy King was discharged from the hospital Saturday following heart surgery after she collapsed on the soccer pitch this month, stopping the match and leaving her teammates visibly shaken.

The team said King, a 20-year-old defender, was discharged from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and is home with her family and “resting comfortably” after heart surgery. It thanked the medical center for the expert care King received and added that it is prepared to support King and her family as she recovers.

The team said last week that her prognosis is “excellent.” It was not immediately clear whether and when she will return to soccer.

“I’m still finding the words to express just how much your love and support have meant to me over these past few days,” King wrote on Instagram. “What I do know is that I wouldn’t be getting through this without my incredible family by my side, my amazing teammates who have shown up for me and prayed for me, the fans, the entire soccer community, and the outstanding medical team here at ACFC who saved my life and cared for me every step of the way.”

King collapsed on the field in the 74th minute of Angel City’s National Women’s Soccer League match against the Utah Royals on May 9. Trainers rushed to her side before she was taken off the field on a stretcher and then to the hospital.

While she was being evaluated, doctors discovered a heart abnormality, prompting surgery Tuesday to remedy the problem, the team said last week.

No other information about the abnormality and the surgery have been revealed. The team asked for respect for King’s privacy as recovers.

“I’m looking forward to recovering and getting back out on the field!” King said on Instagram.

WNBA probes alleged racist fan remarks during Indiana Fever’s home win over Chicago Sky

The WNBA said it is investigating “hateful fan comments” during the Indiana Fever’s home win against the Chicago Sky on Saturday.

The context of the remarks wasn’t entirely clear. They took place as two of the sport’s biggest rivals, the Fever’s Caitlin Clark and the Sky’s Angel Reese, faced off on the court.

“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society,” the league said in a statement Sunday. “We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.”

Things between Clark and Reese got physical when Clark fouled Reese in the third quarter. The contact earned Clark a flagrant foul call and Reese, who tried to have a word with Clark afterward, a technical foul.

At a postgame news conference, Reese brushed it off. “Refs got it right — move on,” she said. Sky head coach Tyler Marsh voiced a similar sentiment at the news conference, dismissing the clash as a “basketball play.”

Sky CEO Adam Fox said the team welcomes the WNBA’s probe into the allegation of racism. “We encourage the league to continue taking meaningful steps to create a safe environment for all WNBA players,” he said in a statement Sunday.

Counterpart Mel Raines, CEO of the Fever’s corporate parent, said the team is cooperating with the investigation.

“We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct,” he said in a statement. “We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.”

A Sky representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night.

Reese played at Louisiana State University before she was drafted into the WNBA. Her rivalry with Clark drew national attention in 2023 when she used a hand gesture familiar to Clark during LSU’s championship win over Iowa, where Clark had achieved fame as one of the college game’s greatest-ever players.

The two have continued to cross paths at the professional level. On Saturday, Clark’s Fever beat Reese’s Sky 93-58. Clark scored 20 points and registered 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Reese ended the game with 12 points, 17 rebounds and one assist.

  • Authorities express confidence in finding 7 remaining escaped New Orleans inmates

Authorities express confidence in finding 7 remaining escaped New Orleans inmates

Authorities expressed confidence Sunday about the prospect of capturing seven of 10 escaped New Orleans inmates who remain at large, possibly before the end of the night.

Federal, state and local authorities have developed usable information about all seven and have received multiple tips on their whereabouts, said the Louisiana State Police superintendent, Col. Robert Hodges.

“We’re confident at this time that we have actual intelligence on all of those fugitives,” he said at a news conference early Sunday evening. “We will track all seven and bring them to justice.”

Three who participated in the escape early Friday, which Gov. Jeff Landry described as one of the largest in state history, were captured by the end of the day, authorities said, crediting tips from the public.

Hodges said agents, officers, marshals, deputies, aircraft and drones from the FBI; the U.S. Marshals Service; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; state police; New Orleans police; and the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office are on the case.

The allied law enforcement dragnet has created a “force multiplier” in the search, Hodges said. He said the seven escapees are most likely still in the state and warned friends and loved ones not to help them remain at large.

Jonathan Tapp, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans office, said, “Those people helping these inmates avoid recapture will be held accountable.”

He added: “These inmates are accused of serious crimes, and until they’re back in custody we should all remain vigilant.”

State Attorney General Liz Murrill is leading the investigation into how they escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center, which serves as New Orleans’ city jail.

“My office will do whatever it takes to determine how this happened and make sure that it won’t happen again,” Murrill said in a statement Friday. “This is beyond unacceptable, and once these offenders are back in custody, there must be real accountability.”

The escapees took advantage of broken locks to get out of their cells before they exited the facility through a makeshift rectangular hole behind a cell’s toilet and sink fixture, authorities said.

As seen in photos provided by the sheriff’s office, messages written on the wall around the opening included “To Easy Lol.”

An 8:30 a.m. Friday head count revealed the 10 were gone, officials said, and the hunt began. NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans reported that, despite its questions about the escape shortly before 10 a.m., the public wasn’t notified until 11 a.m. — after it broke the story.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said Friday that the escapees may have been helped by people “inside of our department.” By the end of the day, three employees had been placed on leave without pay pending investigation.

However, on Sunday, Landry spread blame to what he called New Orleans’ “progressive” justice system, including prosecutors who he said failed to properly charge some of the inmates with crimes that might have triggered their transfers to state facilities.

In addition, said Landry, a Republican, nine of the 10 escapees were awaiting trials that would have moved them to more secure state custody. “There is no excuse for how these cases are allegedly being mismanaged,” he said.

Landry said that he has ordered an audit of the jail and that he directed the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections to pull any state inmates from the New Orleans facility.

Joe Biden has cancer and an anti-natalist ideology is behind a fertility clinic bombing: Weekend Rundown

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his personal office announced Sunday.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” read a statement released by the office. “On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

The former president and his family are meeting with doctors and considering “multiple treatment options,” including hormone treatment for the cancer, according to a source familiar with Biden’s and his family’s thinking.

FBI links California fertility clinic bombing to anti-natalist ideology

Investigators are focusing on social media posts by the suspect in the California fertility clinic bombing that they say support the belief that no one should have children.

While the posts and a 30-minute audio recording are still being verified, officials believe an anti-natalism ideology was the motive behind the bombing, which the FBI deemed an act of terrorism.

The suspect, identified by authorities as Guy Edward Bartkus, is believed to have detonated the explosive in Saturday’s attack, which claimed his own life and injured four others.

The same person may also be linked to an online forum post from earlier this month in which the individual contemplated suicide using an explosive device, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the incident. Investigators are also looking at a YouTube account, under the same moniker, that features videos of experiments with homemade explosives.

Mike Pence criticizes Trump on tariffs and key foreign policy issues

Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized President Donald Trump’s approach to tariffs in an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” calling Trump’s original tariff plan “the largest peacetime tax hike on the American people in the history of this country.”

Pence opened with broad praise for the second Trump administration, applauding the president for having “secured the southern border in a historic way” and ordering military action against the Houthis in Yemen, among other things.

“But in the midst of all of that, I have seen some departure from the policies of our administration both at home and abroad,” Pence told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker. He mentioned “wavering support” for Ukraine in the first 100 days of Trump’s second term, and he was especially critical of Trump’s tariffs.

Pence also said Trump was wrong to issue a blanket pardon of people who faced charges for participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“Individuals who broke into the Capitol, who assaulted police officers, I said that day and I believe to this moment should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Pence said.

    ‘Meet the Press’

Earlier this weak, Moody’s Ratings downgraded the United States’ credit rating by a notch from the highest level. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asserted that the downgrade was related to the Biden administration’s spending policies, which that administration had touted as investments in priorities including combating climate change and increasing health care coverage.

Meanwhile, Sen. Chris Murphy told “Meet the Press” that “it was a mistake” for Democrats to allow Joe Biden to remain in the 2024 presidential race for as long as he did, echoing recent comments from other Democrats as the party reckons with fallout from new reporting on the then-president’s mental acuity.

Pope warns against hatred and ‘religious propaganda’

Pope Leo XIV disavowed “an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest” in a homily at his inaugural Mass in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, marking the formal start of his papacy.

Vice President JD Vance, a convert to Catholicism, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were present for the event, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Leo said the church’s authority must be rooted in charity, not “religious propaganda or by means of power.”

“In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest,” he said, according to an English translation provided by the Vatican.

Journalism rallies to a Preakness victory — and provides a symbolic win for Altadena

Michael McCarthy had just witnessed a display of resilience unfold in front of him at the Preakness Stakes on Saturday when he referenced another.

“We’ll rebuild,” McCarthy told NBC in a televised interview from the wet track of Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course, just minutes after his horse, Journalism, won the 150th running of the Triple Crown’s middle leg. “This is for Altadena.”

Journalism’s victory required a comeback of more than five lengths, an improbable run that required slipping between two horses on either side as it entered the backstretch, then furiously making up ground on leader Gosger, never taking the lead until the final strides.

The route was unexpected and challenging — not all that dissimilar to what Journalism’s trainer and other Southern Californians have endured since the January wildfires impacted more than 30,000 people.
