  • After Omaha, Nebraska largest worksite immigration raid, a community works to recover

After Omaha, Nebraska largest worksite immigration raid, a community works to recover

Garcia said that limiting immigrants’ ability to remain in the country legally is what often pushes people to “borrow” or “make up” false identifications. It is for the “sole purpose of working and nothing else, because there has been no other way for them to adjust their status and work under their own proper name or identification.”

“But our comprehensive immigration reform efforts have not gone through yet, unfortunately. And it’s still badly needed,” García said.

In researching alternatives for E-Verify with guidance from Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., DHS and federal authorities, Hartmann said the options he was presented included temporary work visa programs such as H-1A — meant for industries dealing with workforce shortages — and H-2B, for nonagricultural jobs. But because these immigration programs are for seasonal workers, “it doesn’t fit our needs,” Hartmann said. Saying goodbye to workers every six months is “not building a business.”

Hartmann wishes government officials would consider creating a limited period of amnesty for undocumented people who “meet certain qualifications” such as never having committed a crime, a desire to work, pay taxes and be part of the community. This could be a temporary remedy for people looking to get legal immigration status, he suggested.

While that might not be the answer to the larger immigration issue, he said it’s “some version that makes sense.”

“There should be no problem with that,” Hartmann said, “to just stop the bleeding, stop the problem.”

A new generation of residents speak out

Elizondo organized Friday’s protest with the help and support of other more experienced Latino and immigrant rights advocates. A group of them met on Thursday afternoon at a downtown Omaha restaurant to plan the demonstration. They shared advice on how to work with local law enforcement to ensure the protests remained peaceful and focused on how immigration raids are hurting their communities, the community activists said.

“That has made the new generation speak up,” Rosa la Puente, one of the advocates mentoring Elizondo, said about the recent events.

Many in the community are questioning the timing of the Omaha raid, wondering if the city was targeted for political reasons. When asked about this at a news conference on Wednesday, Ewing said, “I don’t know why Omaha was targeted.”

  • Trump presides over a military parade amid turmoil at home and abroad

Trump presides over a military parade amid turmoil at home and abroad

Trump avoided any overt partisan messages, though he seemed to allude at one point to his “Fight! Fight! Fight!” exhortation after an assassination attempt against him last year.

“Time and again, America’s enemies have learned that if you threaten the American people, our soldiers are coming for you,” Trump said. “Your defeat will be certain. Your demise will be final, and your downfall will be total and complete — because our soldiers never give up, never surrender and never ever quit. They fight, fight, fight and they win, win, win.”

Trump’s appearance on the reviewing stand south of the White House capped a harrowing day in which a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband were murdered — and another Democratic legislator and his wife were wounded — in what authorities called a “politically motivated” attack.

A shooting war has broken out between two longtime Middle East foes, Iran and Israel. And in a further distraction from the parade Trump had long coveted, protesters around the country rallied against the spectacle, turning out by tens of thousands in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and other cities.

Animating the demonstrations was a two-word rallying cry: “No kings.”

The weather didn’t fully cooperate, either. The winds picked up and a light drizzle commenced just as the tanks were about to roll.

The parade was supposed to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, but it was moved up a half hour in deference to the weather, a Secret Service official said. Army tanks, their treads squeaking against the pavement, trundled along Constitution Avenue under an intermittent drizzle. Hundreds of people were still stuck in line, even as the parade was coming to a close two hours later.

Some of the planned flyovers had to be canceled. Still, the crowd gathered on the National Mall looked up appreciatively as helicopters flew overhead in formation.

The parade came on the 250th anniversary of the Army and, as it happens, Trump’s 79th birthday. The timing sparked criticism that the parade was intended as much a celebration of one man as it was the Army. The military estimated the cost at $25 million to $40 million.

The crowd broke out into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” after Trump’s remarks Saturday night.

“The whole idea — doing it on Trump’s birthday … we don’t do this in America,” said Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., a member of the Armed Services Committee. “We do not celebrate individual leaders. We celebrate the Constitution, and we celebrate the country.”

Trump had long pined for a military parade, having been impressed with the Bastille Day celebration he saw in Paris in 2017, the first year of his last term, a former White House official said. His staff put off the idea, citing the cost and the rarity of such spectacles. The last time the nation showed off its military hardware in such fashion came in 1991, at the end of the first Gulf War.

Trump watched approvingly from a viewing stand, flanked by first lady Melania Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. All were cheered by the crowd.

A second missile appears to descend in the distance before the camera shakes and voices erupt in panic as the cameraman runs inside a building.

Israeli firefighters said they were responding to multiple incidents following the latest missile barrage, saying a direct hit on an eight-story building in the Dan District had caused significant damage. It said ten firefighting teams were on site.

Israel issues evacuation warnings in Tehran

    Omer Bekin and Mithil Aggarwal

    Reporting from Tel Aviv, Israel

Israeli defense minister Israel Katz today instructed the IDF to issue evacuation warnings to Tehran residents living near “weapons production compounds,” his spokesperson said in a statement today.

The IDF then issued messages to those in Tehran “living near weapons manufacturing sites, urging them to evacuate for their own safety.”

“The IDF will strike these sites and will continue to peel away the Iranian snake’s skin in Tehran and wherever nuclear or weapons capabilities exist,” the statement added.

U.S. had ‘nothing to do’ with attack on Iran, Trump says

The U.S. “had nothing to do with the attack on Iran” last night, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

“If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” he said.

“However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!” the president added.

Earlier, Trump said in another post that he had spent about an hour on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end,” Trump said, referring to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

At least 13 killed in Iran’s strikes, Israel says

Iran’s retaliatory strikes have killed at least 13 people in Israel, including 3 children, Netanyahu’s office said today.

U.S. confirms nuclear talks with Iran are off but leaves door open for diplomacy

    Andrea Mitchell and Abigail Williams

    Reporting from Washington

The Trump administration confirmed that U.S.-Iran nuclear talks that had been scheduled for today have been canceled due to the ongoing attacks between Israel and Iran.

“While there will be no meeting Sunday, we remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon,” a senior administration official told NBC News.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier said that the sixth round of U.S.-Iran talks, which had been set to take place in Oman, could not go ahead while Iran was under attack.

Israel says it completed a ‘wide-scale strike’ in Tehran

    Omer Bekin and Mithil Aggarwal

    Reporting from Tel Aviv, Israel

Israel completed a “wide-scale strike” on Tehran’s nuclear and fuel storage facilities, the Israeli military said in a statement last night.

The targets, which included Iran’s defense ministry headquarters, “play a key role in advancing Iran’s efforts to obtain nuclear weapons,” the IDF said, adding the strikes were carried out by Israeli fighter jets.

Video shows Iranian missiles striking Haifa

Video circulating on social media and verified by NBC News shows Iranian missiles striking the Israeli port city of Haifa late last night.

The footage shows bright flashes of orange light in the darkness before one missile appears to streak through the sky, striking the ground, causing an explosion, as a plume of smoke rises in the distance.

Iranian state TV reported last night that it was attacking with a combination of drones and missiles, and that Haifa and Tel Aviv were the main targets.

No apparent damage at Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, U.N. says

There is no apparent damage at Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, which has an enrichment plant buried deep underground, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said.

The Khondab heavy water reactor, which is under construction, also appears to be undamaged, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a post on X.

The agency said there had been no further damage at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility since it was targeted by Israeli strikes on Friday.

No increase in off-site radiation is expected at Natanz, and the agency said it had been been informed by Iran’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority that off-site radiation levels also remained unchanged at the Esfahan nuclear facility, where Israeli strikes damaged four “critical buildings.”

  • Panthers close in on 2nd straight Stanley Cup title by beating the Oilers 5-2 in Game 5

Panthers close in on 2nd straight Stanley Cup title by beating the Oilers 5-2 in Game 5

EDMONTON, Alberta — Brad Marchand scored twice, Sam Bennett had his NHL playoff-leading 15th goal and the Florida Panthers moved to the verge of a second consecutive Stanley Cup title by beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in Game 5 on Saturday night.

The Panthers improved to 10-3 on the road this playoffs. They can hoist the Cup again as soon as Tuesday night if they win Game 6 on home ice in Sunrise.

Florida this time built a multigoal lead and built on it, unlike a couple of previous games in the final. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced, making some important saves when needed, and was aided by lockdown defense that took ice away from the Oilers.

Marchand, Bennett and Sam Reinhart provided the offense. Marchand joined Mario Lemieux as the only players in the past half-century to score five-plus goals in a final multiple times, and his 13 career goals in the final are the most among active players.

Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the series after the Oilers fell behind 3-0. Reinhart’s came 46 seconds later to restore the Panthers’ three-goal lead, and by the time Corey Perry scored with 3:13 left, it was too late.

Eetu Luostarinen sealed it with an empty-netter with 1:19 left, silencing the once fired-up crowd for a final time.

Edmonton’s power play went 0 for 3, a product of the Panthers’ aggressive penalty kill knocking McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the rest of the top unit out of their usual rhythm.

Calvin Pickard lost for the first time in eight starts this spring, allowing four goals on 18 shots. He got the nod over Stuart Skinner after entering in relief and winning Game 4 to improve to 7-0, a record that is now 7-1.

Skinner could be back in for Game 6, with the Panthers aiming to close things out following another cross-continental trip back to the other corner of North America. They are in this spot after bouncing back from blowing a three-goal lead and falling in overtime in Game 4, taking advantage of their depth to send the Oilers to the brink again.
